5S-FE Shift Points
How to Get the Most Out of Mashing That 5-speed

The graph above shows the effective torque to the wheels for a 5sfe, 5spd celica from 0-145mph. It is the result of a sprawling Excel sheet, inputting presure2's dyno graph, and the known gear ratios for 6th gen celica: [3.230, 1.913, 1.258, 0.918, 0.731].

  • If you have a 5sfe-powered MR2, the ratios are slightly different: [3.285, 1.960, 1.322, 1.028, 0.820]. I think the shifts will be very close for an MR2, but I don't care to calculate the exact RPM.

Since we want to go fast, the best RPM to shift at will result in the highest torque applied to the wheels, for as long as possible.
To summarize the graph, the optimal RPM for each shift are:

    1st-2nd: 6300 RPM [redline]
    2nd-3rd: 6100 RPM [almost redline]
    3rd-4th: 5800 RPM
    4th-5th: 4500 RPM

Should you forget these shift points, you won't be far wrong if for the first 3 shifts, you aim as close to redline as you are comfortable revving, and then relax for the 4th shift, taking it by feel.
