Since I was 12, I have had horrible acne. I have tried every salicylic acid product I got my hands on, retin-A, benzoyl cream, oral antibiotic, and most cleanser systems known to man. I had tried eliminating dairy and various foods from my diet. My acne is still present, at 25, although in the past 6 months, it's EXTREMELY reduced. These are the only two behaviors that significantly reduce my acne.
1. Wash with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide - the brand is not important, but the big 10% dose is. The 1-2% mixtures had no effect. Also, make sure to buy a wash, and not a topical cream. Be gentle, apply the Benzoyl Peroxide
to your whole acne-affected area, and rinse and towel dry once a day (usually dryness prevents people from twice a day). Be very careful with this stuff, as it stains clothing. I've washed with Benzoyl Peroxide
, rinsed well, and later sweated onto my shirt. The sweat carried traces of Benzoyl Peroxide
out of my pores to the neck of the shirt, and I've ruined several collars with orangey bleached streaks this way, and for that reason I use Benzoyl Peroxide
only about once a week. Don't use it before wearing your favorite formal clothes, but 10% Benzoyl Peroxide
seriously works. Seriously.
2. Slow-carb diet - I eat nearly 0 sugar + 0 processed carbs. But diets based on exclusion don't work, so it's important to understand what you can replace crap-carb-laden foods with, because diets based on replacement succeed. Though I love fruits and berries, and you might too, experiment with replacing ALL fruits and sweets with vegetables. Exceptional fruits you may eat are tomatoes and avocados because they have almost no fructose (sugar). Replace all white crap-carbs (breads, cereals, bagels, pastas, sugar-added yogurts, pastries, donuts) with legumes: beans, lentils or nuts. Continue to eat eggs and quality meats (NOT McDonald's, but any meat you buy at the grocery store that isn't injected with salt) and eat non-sugar salsa, spices vegetables and whenever you're hungry snack on nuts. Eat as much as you want, whenever you're hungry. As much as I love fruits and berries, I love my clearer skin and stable blood sugar a little more.
I want to let you know that it won't be easy because this diet requires self-discipline. But this diet will cut your weight no matter what, as I went from 174 to 168 in two weeks even though at 6'3", I'm skinny/strong to begin with, and overweight people lose pounds on this diet week after week. But the best part is, I found this diet banished acne. Now that I'm pretty good at replacing sugar and crap-carbs with real food, my acne is reduced to 2-3 tiny whiteheads or very small reddish bumps per week, a level where it really doesn't bother me anymore. I've cut down the Benzoyl Peroxide to once a week or less, because it stains, and with the diet it feels unnecessary. I'm sick and tired of people selling acne cures that don't work, so I want to get the word out on two cheap, simple behavioral changes that really work and reduce acne for me. I sincerely hope that you have the strength to experiment for at least one week with one or both of these two simple, cheap remedies and may you find that they reduce your acne to a bearable, non-horrible level or even clear your skin completely. Best wishes for your clear skin!
